CYBERSECURITY
The deepfake arms race has a clear winner, and it isn’t the defenders.
Two years ago, detection tools could identify AI-generated video with reasonable accuracy. Today, the best generative models produce output that consistently fools both automated detectors and human reviewers. We have crossed a threshold, and most people haven’t noticed yet.
What’s Changed
The compute required to generate convincing deepfakes has fallen dramatically. What once required expensive GPU clusters can now run on consumer hardware. The open-source models that power this have proliferated across the internet and cannot be recalled. The barrier to entry for creating a convincing fake video of a real person is now measured in hours, not months.

Detection Is Losing
Detection tools work by identifying statistical artefacts left by the generation process — subtle patterns in pixel distributions, unnatural blinking rates, inconsistent lighting. The problem is that every time a detection method is published, it becomes training signal for the next generation of models to correct for. It’s a textbook adversarial dynamic, and the generators have the structural advantage.
What This Means in Practice
In the near term, this matters most for financial fraud, political disinformation, and personal reputation attacks. We’re already seeing cases where convincing audio deepfakes of executives have been used to authorise fraudulent transfers. We’re seeing fabricated video used in political campaigns. We’re seeing personal deepfakes used as a harassment and coercion tool.
The honest answer is that detection isn’t going to solve this. The solution, if there is one, lies in provenance — cryptographic signing of authentic media at the point of creation. But that requires camera manufacturers, platforms, and standards bodies to coordinate in ways that have historically taken decades.
